FERMA: "Stockholm rated better overall than competing cities"
Florence Bindelle, Executive Manager of FERMA
The Federation of European Risk Management Associations (FERMA) held a highly appreciated meeting in Stockholm during three days in October 2011. The help from the Stockholm Convention Bureau, the compact size of the city and many social activities contributed to the positive experience.
Florence Bindelle, Executive Manager of FERMA, tells us about the biennial Risk Management Forum that attracted a record number of 1,521 risk professionals. Over 60 companies took part in the exhibition that was arranged in connection with the meeting.
Why did you choose Stockholm?
Important criteria when choosing a destination are budget, security and accessibility, the possibility to arrange social activities and the quality of the congress center and accommodations.
Stockholm rated better overall than competing cities. An advantage for Stockholm was the Waterfront Congress Centre’s position in the heart of the city and hotels within walking distance.
The strong engagement from the City of Stockholm with the offer of a welcome reception also contributed.
What is your impression of...
…the Stockholm Convention Bureau?
The Stockholm Convention Bureau was very helpful from the beginning. They provided us with information so that our board could make a decision. They know the city and understood exactly what we needed. We also had a very good site visit.
I like that the Stockholm Convention Bureau is independent and gives advice, but it is up to you to select which suppliers you want to work with. The Stockholm Convention Bureau also facilitated the discussions when we had a misunderstanding with a venue.
…the Stockholm Waterfront Congress Centre?
The congress center was perfect for us. The exhibition area is probably the best we have had because of the daylight, the wooden floors and the view. There are two very nice bars with a view of the water and the City Hall. The challenge will be to have something with the same standards the next time.
For meetings our size, the Stockholm Waterfront Congress Centre is a good choice, especially if you have an exhibition as well. Because the congress center was new, there were a few teething problems with audio and other things, but overall we were content.
…hotels in Stockholm?
The quality of the accommodation is good.
Public transportation is by foot! The congress center, hotels and social events were so close that we could walk everywhere. The only transportation we tried was Arlanda Express, the airport express train, which was very efficient.
…the possibility to organize social activities in Stockholm?
We probably had the best parties ever. There were nice events at Café Opera, Grand Hôtel and the Museum of Modern Art. We had dinner and cocktails at the Vasa Museum and a farewell lunch at the City Hall.
Would you recommend Stockholm as a meeting destination?
Yes, certainly. Reasons to choose Stockholm are the congress center, the compact city and the helpful and friendly Swedes. Stockholm is a beautiful city all year round, thanks to the water that is everywhere. It is a clean and safe city.
Most people have not been here before, and many of our participants took the chance to get to know the city by arriving a few days early.
